What's good in Kingston

Canada’s first co-op housing and vertical farm is coming to Kingston in a $100M game-changer

Limestone City Co-operative Housing Inc. (LCCH) is working towards what they describe as a Landmark $100 million project to build Canada’s first co-op housing and vertical farm, and it would be built in Kingston.

Jeff McLaren, LCCH president says the initiative promises 248 affordable units for 400 residents, paired with sustainable farming.

The design includes a 200-year lifespan, off-grid energy, zero greenhouse gas emissions, and a vertical farm producing food for residents and the community.

McLaren who is also a Kingston City Councillor described a new funding commitment they've received as “a dream come true.”

He praised partners Dominion Lending, Canada ICI, and PermaTech EcoSolutions for their pivotal roles in securing the deal.

He adds that the project is expected to redefine housing, food security, and energy independence.

A release from the group quotes Kingston Councillor Conny Glenn, who envisioned the vertical farm addition and says the project “elegantly addresses housing, food sustainability, and climate challenges.”

McLaren says LCCH plans to raise the remaining $20 million through community contributions.
