Trek for teens: Helping Kingston's vulnerable youth
In Kingston, half of the youth experiencing homelessness are female, a higher rate than the national average. Alarming data shows 77% of homeless youth in the city are approached for prostitution, drugs, or other exploitative activities within just 45 minutes of losing their housing.
To address this crisis, Queen’s University students launched Trek for Teens Kingston in 2016. The initiative works closely with the Kingston Youth Shelter to support vulnerable youth. Kingston Director Madison Troke explains who they are.
Trek for Teens hosts events throughout the year, including concerts and game nights, to raise funds and awareness for the cause. Their efforts help provide critical resources for young people in need, offering them a chance to rebuild their lives. Community partnership is crucial to Trek for Teens as Madison explains.
The opportunities for area residents to support this very worthwhile cause are almost endless according to Madison
In addition they're always looking for volunteers for either continual support such as social media and content marketing management, and with graphic design and web development. In addition they love any help they can get for short term programs or one-time events.
With youth homelessness posing significant risks in Kingston, local initiatives like Trek for Teens are making a difference by shedding light on the issue and fostering community action.
