Affordable Housing or Missed Opportunity?

Napanee Debates County’s Bold Proposal

The County of Lennox and Addington has proposed a 42-unit affordable housing project, prompting thoughtful discussions within Napanee council.

The county’s plan includes a request for lower-tier municipalities to donate land for the development, raising questions about local priorities and resources.

A 2.3-acre parcel of land near the intersection of Camden and Newburgh Roads, formerly known as the Suddard development area, was highlighted as a potential site. However, council expressed concerns about severing this land from the larger 15-acre property, which could limit future development opportunities.

Deputy Mayor Brian Calver felt they needed to take a good hard look before they look at any land to give away.

Council members stressed the importance of reviewing all available municipal lands before making a decision. With a moratorium on land disposition in place until March 2025, they agreed that rushing into a commitment could overlook better alternatives.

Councillor Bill Martin raised the question, how many residents of Napanee would benefit or are they bringing in residents from some of the other municipalities?

While no specific land commitment was made, council resolved to continue discussions with the county. They aim to better understand the project’s requirements and assess how it aligns with local development goals.

Decisions on land use will wait until the completion of a comprehensive land inventory, expected in early 2025.
