Expanded alcohol sales gets the blame
The Beer Store’s Princess Street location in Kingston is set to close this month as part of a province-wide shift in alcohol sales.
The closure comes after the Ontario government allowed the sale of beer and wine in convenience and grocery stores.
The United Food and Commercial Workers Local 12R24 confirmed the Kingston store is among 23 locations shutting down across Ontario.
The union says affected workers are being offered other positions or buyouts.
More closures are expected, and workers have raised concerns about job security.
The Beer Store has not confirmed which locations will be next but says it is evaluating its operations.
Several eastern Ontario stores have already closed, including locations in Westport and Marmora.
