The new 17,500-square-foot facility will be twice the size of the current space.
Kingston’s Partners in Mission Food Bank is making big changes as it prepares to move to a new location. The food bank has just hit the 50% mark of its $1 million dollar renovation and moving fundraising goal.
After more than 20 years on Hickson Avenue, the food bank will relocate 400 metres west to 4 Harvey St. by the end of April.
The new 17,500-square-foot facility will be twice the size of the current space. Clients will no longer wait outside for hampers. Instead, they will shop for the items they need. The food bank is also getting rid of its point system and will provide bins based on household size.
Two years ago, the food bank purchased the Harvey Street building for $3.2 million and has spent $1.5 million on renovations. The new location will open to clients on April 29.
Donations are still needed to help them hit their fundraising goal. The food bank says demand has grown, and this expansion will help serve the community better.
