Charges laid in fatal Napanee fire

Man from Picton faces numerous charges

An arrest has been made in connection with the tragic fire in Napanee that claimed the life of a 67-year-old resident.

On August 3, 2024, just before 8:15 p.m., Lennox and Addington County OPP, alongside the Greater Napanee Fire Department and Hastings Quinte Paramedic Services, responded to a fire at a multi-unit residence on John Street in Greater Napanee. Despite efforts to save one of the residents, he was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital.

As the investigation progressed, 31-year-old Andrew James Thompson of Picton was arrested and charged with multiple serious offenses, including murder, criminal harassment, and arson. Thompson remains in custody and is set to appear in court on August 10th.

The investigation is ongoing, with the L&A County OPP Crime Unit working closely with several agencies, including the Criminal Investigation Branch and the Office of the Fire Marshal. Authorities are urging anyone with information to contact L&A County OPP or Crime Stoppers.

This incident has left the Napanee community in shock as they await further developments.
