Contraband drop denied at Warkworth Institution

Drone operator facing charges

This drone won't be taking off for quite a while.

A 36-year-old Kingston man was arrested on October 24, 2024, after being caught smuggling drugs and contraband into Warkworth Institution using a drone. The investigation, which began in September, was led by the Kingston Police Intelligence Unit with support from the Ontario Provincial Police.

Police apprehended the suspect in a vehicle near the facility, where he was flying the drone. He was found with a package containing 180 grams of cannabis, 57 grams of cannabis shatter, 24 mini cell phones, and 1000 grams of tobacco. The estimated value of the smuggled goods is $200,000.

The accused faces multiple charges, including dangerous operation of a drone, an act likely to cause mischief endangering life, and two counts of breaching a release order. He remains in custody pending a bail hearing. This incident highlights the ongoing efforts to combat contraband smuggling in Canadian correctional facilities.
