Kingston and area prepares for heavy rain

Cataraqui Conservation says use caution around water

The Cataraqui Conservation Authority has issued a Water Safety Statement due to the heavy rainfall expected from the remnants of Tropical Storm Debby. Forecasts predict 40-100 mm of rain, with the heaviest downpour tomorrow, August 9, 2024.

Environment Canada has also issued Rainfall Warnings, anticipating 50-75 mm of rain, with localized higher amounts possible.

Residents are urged to exercise caution around water bodies, including dams, fast-flowing watercourses, and stormwater ponds.

The risks include rapidly rising streams and potential localized flooding in low-lying areas. While widespread flooding is unlikely, Cataraqui Conservation advises everyone to avoid the water's edge and follow all posted warning signs.

The Water Safety Statement will remain in effect until August 12th at 11:59 PM. For assistance with flooding concerns, residents should contact their local municipalities. Staying safe around water is a top priority during this weather event. (Word count: 154)
