Blame game continues

The contractor hired to fix Kingston’s century-old LaSalle Causeway bridge is suing the federal government and an engineering firm for over $8 million after the structure collapsed.

CBC reports Landform Civil Infrastructures Inc. (LCI) claims Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC) withheld payment and wrongly blamed the company for the March 30, 2024, failure. LCI also alleges that engineering firm Sigma Risk "negligently" and "incorrectly" concluded it was at fault, damaging its reputation and costing it future jobs.

The bridge was demolished in June and reopened in October, after months of traffic gridlock and losses for downtown businesses.

Three subcontractors are also suing LCI, its president Derek Martin, and Liberty Mutual Insurance for a combined $1.6 million over unpaid invoices.

Neither the government nor Sigma Risk has filed a defence. CBC says PSPC declined to comment, citing legal matters. Sigma Risk also refused to comment.
