Kingston Councillor faces reprimand over leaked confidential meeting details

Argued details were reported to the public

Kingston city Councillor Jeff McLaren is under scrutiny after violating the Municipal Act by emailing details from a closed meeting to the public.

According to a report by integrity commissioner Laura Dean, McLaren ignored advice not to disclose confidential information discussed behind closed doors.

Despite this, McLaren was cleared of breaching two other sections of the Act.

Dean stressed that McLaren's disregard for professional advice should be considered an aggravating factor when determining sanctions.

McLaren argued that much of the leaked information had already been reported in the media and was public record.

However, Dean maintained that any confidential information remains protected, even if it’s been shared elsewhere.

The report recommends McLaren receive a formal reprimand and a 30-day suspension of his pay.

Three other councillors weighed in on the investigation, with two confirming the breach.

City council will review the findings at Tuesday’s meeting.
