Kingston homeowners brace for property tax increase

Larges tax hike in over a decade looming

Homeowners in Kingston could see the biggest property tax increase in more than 10 years as City Council considers the 2025 budget.

The proposed 5.3 per cent hike means an average homeowner with a house assessed at $328,000 will pay $210 more this year.

The $507-million operating budget, Kingston’s first to top half a billion dollars, includes a 2.5 per cent municipal tax hike and a 2.8 per cent increase for external agencies like police and conservation authorities.

Kingston Police is requesting a 13 per cent budget boost to $58 million, citing rising salaries. Other agencies, including Kingston Access Services and the library board, are also seeking higher funding.

Key projects in the $131.3-million capital budget include $26.5 million for roads and $9.5 million for affordable housing.

Utility bills are also rising, with water and sewer rates increasing 10 per cent.

Council will review the budget starting January 20.
