Kingston provides incentive to boost rental housing

The Additional Residential Unit Incentive provides grants

The City of Kingston is offering new financial assistance for property owners to create additional residential units (ARUs) and expand the city’s rental housing supply.

ARUs are independent dwelling units located within or on the same property as single-detached houses, semi-detached houses, or townhouses.

The Additional Residential Unit (ARU) Incentive provides five types of support, including forgivable loans and non-repayable grants. Property owners who build ARUs and meet program conditions can benefit from these funding options. Notably, forgivable loans do not need to be repaid if the property owner complies with the program terms for five years.

Applications are reviewed and approved on a first-come, first-served basis while funding lasts. This initiative aims to increase affordable housing options in Kingston, making it easier for residents to find suitable rental properties.
