City faces serious road condition challenges
Kingston plans to repair 77 kilometres of roads in 2025 to improve the overall condition of its road network.
The city’s 1,828 kilometres of roads are in poor condition, with over 60% rated fair, poor, or very poor.
A report to city council from Brad Joyce, commissioner of infrastructure, transportation, and emergency services, highlights the need for significant investments to maintain road quality, citing long-term underfunding of road maintenance.
As part of the 2025 budget, the city plans to allocate $7.5 million to repair roads in poor condition. Joyce’s report also noted that residents often want worse roads prioritized, but the high cost of full reconstruction means roads in better condition are sometimes repaired first to maximize overall benefits.
Kingston’s road network currently holds a fair condition rating, and the city faces challenges in addressing the backlog of poor roads.
