Silver! Wolfe Island's Kristina Walker’s crew hits the podium

This is her first Olympic medal

The Canadian women’s eight rowing team captured a silver medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics, marking their second consecutive podium finish in this event. Kristina Walker, originally from Wolfe Island, who trained in Kingston is part of silver crew.

The stellar team, which also includes Jessica Sevick, Caileigh Filmer, Maya Meschkuleit, Kasia Gruchalla-Wesierski, Avalon Wasteneys, Sydney Payne, Abby Dent, and Kristen Kit, completed the 2000m course at Vaires-sur-Marne Nautical Stadium in 5:58.84, securing second place behind Romania.

Romania took an early lead, but Canada kept pace and briefly took the lead at the first checkpoint. Romania quickly regained their lead and maintained it. By the 1500m mark, Romania had a significant advantage, and Canada was pursued closely by Great Britain. Canada held off Great Britain by 0.67 seconds to clinch the silver medal.

After placing third in their heat, the Canadian crew advanced to the final by finishing second in the repechage. This silver medal marks Canada’s sixth Olympic medal in the women’s eight rowing event. It is Walker's first trip to the podium at an Olympics.
