Thousands of houses to be built down the road (pun intended)
The federal government is investing $3.5 million in Loyalist Township to speed up home construction and tackle the housing crisis. The funding comes from the Housing Accelerator Fund (HAF), designed to cut red tape, increase housing density, and streamline zoning and permitting.
Mayor Jim Hegadorn said, “We are grateful to have been selected to receive federal funding through the Government of Canada’s Housing Accelerator Fund. This funding, along with partnerships with the County of Lennox and Addington, the development community, and our residents, will allow us to take meaningful steps toward increasing the supply of safe and affordable housing in Loyalist Township.”
The agreement will help build 111 new homes over the next three years and set the stage for 1,608 more over the next decade. Loyalist Township is making zoning changes to allow up to four residential units per lot in urban areas and promoting medium-density housing.
To improve efficiency, the township will introduce an online planning portal and provide developers with clear guidelines. A partnership with Lennox and Addington County will support affordable housing, and a new incentive plan will reduce financial barriers for rental and affordable housing projects.
The federal government says it remains committed to making housing more accessible and affordable across Canada.
