Residents may notice taste and odour in tap water

Normal for this time of year

Notice a bit of a taste in your drinking water?

Residents of Ontario municipalities drawing water from Lake Ontario might experience taste and odour issues in late summer or early fall.

Loyalist Township recently shared information that says these occurrences are due to natural biological changes in the water, which produce compounds that can cause a musty or earthy taste and smell.

Although the water may seem unpleasant, it remains safe to drink.

Seasonal taste and odour problems are common and not a threat to public health.

The Township is working to reduce the impact of these events using ultrafiltration membranes at water treatment plants, though complete elimination of the issue is not possible.

The taste and odour vary each year based on weather and water levels.
