New sign coming to Slush Puppie Place needs an "I"

Another way to honour the Tragically Hip, and to bring fans closer to their legacy is coming to Slush Puppie Place.

A new sign, "The I in THE HIP," will soon be installed.

Visitors will get to stand in the space where the “I” usually goes, much like the "K_ngston" sign near City Hall.

Unveiling is set for Oct. 6 at 3:30 p.m. at 1 The Tragically Hip Way, with members of the band and local dignitaries attending the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The sign, created by Assembly Plus Kingston, measures 28 feet wide and 6 feet high, weighing 1,000 pounds. It features a stylish bowler hat made from steel and aluminum, a tribute to the late Gord Downie.

Before moving to its permanent location, the sign will appear at the Isabel Bader Centre for two screenings of the new Tragically Hip documentary "No Dress Rehearsal" on Oct. 1 and 2, raising funds for the United Way KFL&A campaign.

The sign will be a permanent honour of the band's lasting impact on the Kingston community.

The timing of the sign is not suspect. It coincides with the release of the "No Dress Rehearsal" docuseries on the band now streaming on Prime Video.
