SIU clears Kingston Police in balcony fall incident

No reasonable grounds to believe officer committed a criminal offence

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has cleared a Kingston Police officer of any wrongdoing after a 29-year-old man fell from a balcony on April 29, 2024.

The incident occurred at an apartment building near Days and Bath Roads, where officers, including the Mobile Crisis Rapid Response Team, responded to reports of a man standing outside a balcony railing.

Despite efforts by trained negotiators to persuade the man to step back, he fell to the ground, suffering fractures to his pelvis and ribs. The SIU, an independent agency that investigates serious incidents involving police, was notified and launched an investigation.

After reviewing the case, SIU Director Joseph Martino found no reasonable grounds to believe the officer committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident. The investigation has been closed with no charges laid against the officer. The full Director’s Report is available on the SIU’s website.
