Today we're visiting Sun Harvest Greenhouses in Glenburnie.
For Kieran Shannon, agriculture has always been a part of everyday life. Growing up at Sun Harvest Greenhouses, he watched his family turn a passion for farming into a thriving local business known for its greenhouse vegetables, garden plants and commitment to quality.
Since opening on the original Shannon Homestead in 2002, Sun Harvest has grown from producing hydroponic tomatoes into one of the Kingston region's leading garden centres, while continuing to provide fresh tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce and other locally grown produce.
Shannon says growing up on the farm gave him an appreciation for the hard work and dedication that goes into agriculture. Whether helping in the greenhouses, working with customers or learning how crops are grown, he says every day brought new lessons in responsibility, teamwork and problem-solving.
He says farming today is also about innovation. From using beneficial insects to naturally control pests to recycling irrigation water and finding new ways to reduce energy use, Sun Harvest is always looking for ways to grow food responsibly while protecting the environment for future generations.
Looking ahead, Shannon is proud to be part of the next generation carrying the family business forward. He hopes more young people will take the opportunity to experience agriculture firsthand, saying it's an industry that teaches valuable skills, builds strong communities and offers the chance to make a real impact.
