All four Kingston locations will have surprise bags with food at a discounted price.
Food Basics stores in Kingston have joined a popular app that aims to reduce food waste by offering discounted food.
Too Good to Go allows people to purchase surprise bags containing a variety of food products at a discounted price.
Tyler Grunig, store manager at Food Basics on Gardiners Rd., says the response from customers has been overwhelmingly positive since they started the program in June.
Metro, Pizza Pizza, and Tim Horton's locations in the Kingston area are also on the Too Good to Go app.
Each store will provide bags containing different items for sale each day.
Grunig goes over what Food Basics customers can get at their stores.
He says once a customer places their order, they can pick it up at the store at a designated time.
The Too Good to Go app was first developed in Europe in 2016 in an effort to help businesses sell their surplus of food that would otherwise end up in landfills.
"We make it easy for businesses to recover value from their surplus and just as easy for people to save good food at a great price," said VP of North American Operations, Chris MacAuley in an email to KingstonDaily.ca.
"We’ve partnered with more than 16,000 businesses in Canada and helped rescue over 10 million meals from going to waste."
With food inflation impacting family budgets, Too Good to Go is a way to get quality food at more than half the cost.
"We’ve seen that when food prices rise, both consumers and businesses look for smart ways to adapt," said MacAuley.
"People might discover us because they’re looking to stretch their grocery budget, but they stay because it’s convenient, it feels good, and it makes a real difference."
People can download the Too Good to Go app at the App Store and Google Play.
