Queen's battle RMC in Gananoque in annual fundraising game.
The annual Lou Jeffries scholarship game is coming up in Gananoque.
The game is a fundraiser for the Lou Jeffries Scholarship Fund that helps a first-year varsity hockey player attending Queen's University with tuition.
Gaels head coach Brett Gibson is one former player who was coached under the Gananoque native.
He says Jeffries helped shaped the hockey community in that town.
He served on the board of the Gananoque Minor Hockey Association for 50 years and was a key contributor in brining Junior B hockey to Gananoque in 1971.
Jeffries was also a supporter of the Gaels hockey program. He died in 2006 at the age of 75.
Gibson says he came up with the idea of creating a scholarship in Jeffries' honour soon after his passing.
This year's recipient of the scholarship is Thomas Herman. His father and brother were previously members of the Gaels men's hockey team.
This year's game sees the Queen's Gaels taking on the R-M-C Paladins Saturday Sept. 6 at 2:30 pm at the Lou Jeffries Arena in Gananoque.
Gibson says the game not only recognizes the work Jeffries has done for hockey in Gananoque but also the rivalry between the Gaels and the Paladins over the last two decades.
Tickets for the game are $10 each, children under 16 are free with a paid adult admission. Kids who wear a hockey jersey also get in free.
