Kingston Police are warning residents about a bank account scam circulating in Ontario that involves fraudsters posing as police officers.
In the scam, victims receive a phone call from someone claiming to be a police officer who says their bank account has been compromised. The caller then instructs the victim to hand over debit cards and cash in Canadian or U.S. currency to a person who will come to their home to collect the items.
Police say the money and cards are supposedly taken to “protect” the victim’s account.
Authorities say the scam has often targeted older adults.
Kingston Police remind residents to verify any request before sharing money or personal information. People should confirm an individual’s identity using a known phone number or official contact and be cautious of urgent requests.
Police say residents should never give personal information, debit cards or money to unknown individuals.
Anyone who believes they may have been affected is encouraged to report the incident to their local police service.
