City events, exhibitions and tributes highlight 30 years of Black History Month in Canada.
The City of Kingston is recognizing February as Black History and Futures Month, marking 30 years since Black History Month was officially recognized in Canada.
This year’s national theme, announced by the federal government, is 30 Years of Black History Month: Honouring Black Brilliance Across Generations — From Nation Builders to Tomorrow’s Visionaries. The theme highlights the legacy, resilience and lasting contributions of Black Canadians, including generations of Black residents in Kingston.
Vanessa Mensah, the city’s manager of equity, diversity and inclusion, said Black history in Kingston continues to shape the community’s values and future.
Throughout the month, residents are encouraged to attend community-led events, exhibitions and celebrations. Queen’s University’s Human Rights and Equity Office has curated a list of activities, including discounted shows at the Kingston Grand Theatre and a Black-owned business vendor market.
City Hall and Springer Market Square will be illuminated in red, green and yellow on Feb. 1 and the Pan-African flag will be raised on Feb. 2 and 28 to celebrate Black History & Futures Month.
