Conservative candidate Bryan Paterson was defeated by Liberal MP Mark Gerretsen in Monday night’s federal election for Kingston and the Islands.
He will return to the City's Mayor's Chair.

Despite the result, Paterson said he’s excited to return to City Hall, where he’s served as Kingston’s mayor for nearly a decade. Many voters told him during the campaign they preferred he stay in that role.
Paterson, who was joined by family and supporters on election night, said he respects the community’s decision and is proud of the campaign he ran.
He entered the federal race to bring local issues to Ottawa but now plans to continue that work at the municipal level.
Paterson previously served four years as a city councillor before becoming mayor in 2014.
He returns to work at City Hall Tuesday, ready to keep advocating for Kingston’s future.
