Will take unpaid leave when campaign begins
Kingston’s three-term mayor, Bryan Paterson, has been named the Conservative candidate for Kingston and the Islands in the next federal election.
Paterson, an economist and professor at the Royal Military College, says he is ready to bring his results-driven leadership to Ottawa.
As mayor, he helped build the Waaban Crossing, attracted major employers, and kept tax increases among the lowest in Ontario. He also launched the Mayor’s Innovation Challenge, creating job opportunities for young people.
Paterson says he was motivated to run after hearing from residents struggling with affordability, housing, and mental health issues. He has also criticized federal policies, including U.S. tariffs, plans for Kingston Penitentiary, and the mismanagement of the LaSalle Causeway.
Paterson, a husband and father of two, will take an unpaid leave from his mayoral and teaching roles when the election begins. He says Kingston needs a strong voice in Ottawa to push for real change.
