A large crowd gathered in Kingston on Saturday, Nov. 1 for the unveiling of a new national war memorial honouring Canadian veterans who lost their lives in military conflicts.
The National Memorial to the Fallen was officially revealed at Macdonald Park during a ceremony that began at 1 p.m. Retired General Walt Natynczyk, former Chief of Defense Staff, RCMP Inspector Gary Coulter (retired), chair of the National Wall of Remembrance Association, and Kingston Mayor Bryan Paterson delivered speeches to mark the occasion.
A helicopter flyby took place as part of the ceremony, offering a solemn tribute to fallen service members.
The memorial is dedicated to all Canadian service members who made the ultimate sacrifice. Attendees stood in silence to pay their respects as the monument was unveiled.
The event went ahead rain or shine, with many saying the memorial offers a meaningful new place for remembrance ahead of Remembrance Day. The monument is now open for public viewing at 1 King St. in Macdonald Park.
