Fronts rally on Fight Cancer Night but lose 4-3 in extra time to IceDogs
The Kingston Frontenacs came close but fell 4-3 in overtime to the Niagara IceDogs in an emotional and physical Saturday night matchup.
Niagara opened the scoring five minutes into the first period and maintained a 1-0 lead heading into the second.
During the first intermission, fans took part in the team’s annual “Fronts Fight Cancer” Night, walking around the rink and ringing a bell to honor those affected by cancer, drawing loud applause.
The game heated up in the second period. Near the end, a fight left blood on the ice. Lukas Moore received a major penalty and misconduct for fighting, while Niagara’s Liam Spencer was assessed five minutes for instigating the altercation.
Kingston responded with two goals in the second and another early in the third to take a 3-1 lead. But Niagara scored twice late to tie the game.
Head coach Troy Mann said the team lacks “bite” on the right side in overtime.
The IceDogs scored the winner midway through overtime.
Landon Wright, who scored twice, said quick momentum swings are just part of hockey.
Matthew Minchak finished with 43 saves.
