Mechanical problems with generators are causing service disruptions on the Wolfe Islander IV ferry.
The ferry, designed to run on electricity, currently operates on diesel while its charging system is being set up.
Last weekend, the new ferry was taken out of service due to generator failures, leaving residents stranded for hours.
The vessel faced two unscheduled outages Saturday before returning to service by early evening.
The Ontario Ministry of Transportation has not confirmed the exact cause of the issues but acknowledges the ferry’s vital role in connecting Wolfe Island with the mainland.
Despite government efforts to promote the Wolf Islander IV as a green transportation example, it still burns diesel fuel, with monthly costs between $150,000 and $200,000.
Previous repairs focused on reducing wear and overheating of the generators.
The ministry continues working on improving the ferry’s reliability as it awaits the completion of its electric charging infrastructure.
