Kingston cab company looks forward to transition to City-led taxi commission

Amey's Taxi is one of two companies in Kingston that are governed by the current taxi commission.

One taxi company in Kingston is happy that the City will be taking over governance of the local taxi industry.

City Council voted to dissolve the Kingston and Area Taxi Commission at their meeting on Aug. 12.

The City will be overseeing licensing and regulation of taxi companies as of Sept. 2026.

Jenn Nyhoff, general manager of Amey's Greenwood Taxi, says she fully supports Council's decision to move to a municipally-led model.

Nyhoff says it was becoming difficult working with the Kingston and Area Taxi Commission.

One of the reasons Council decided to dissolve the taxi commission was the issue of transparency especially around the delivery and auditing of financial records.

Nyhoff says another issue is the accessible taxi program where passengers with mobility issues can go anywhere in the city for a flat fee.

She says there were promises being made by the commission that were not being kept.

Modern City Taxi is another cab company that is currently governed under the current commission.

KingstonDaily.ca also reached out to Modern City for a comment but did not hear back from them before our deadline.
