Safety officials highlight warning signs, CO alarm rules and key steps to prevent winter emergencies.
Utilities Kingston is urging residents to stay alert to natural gas and carbon monoxide dangers as colder weather moves in. The utility says natural gas is safe when used properly, but knowing the signs of a leak is critical.
“Recognize the signs of a gas leak and act quickly,” said James Ingram, Manager of Gas Operations. He says unusual smells, a hissing sound or dead vegetation near gas lines can signal trouble. If a leak is suspected, people should leave immediately without using lights, phones or anything that could spark, then call 613-546-1181.
The utility also warns about carbon monoxide, a colourless and odourless gas created by faulty appliances or poor ventilation. CO poisoning can cause dizziness, confusion or death. Residents should test alarms regularly and replace sensors every five to 10 years.
