A 115-pound robot named Alex, built by Kingston-area students, is heading to Texas for the 2025 FIRST Robotics Competition Championship.
The team behind Alex won big at the provincial tournament in Mississauga on April 5, taking top honours in the Science Division and Excellence in Engineering.
The robot was created by 28 students from 13 local schools. They worked together under WAFFLES, a Kingston-based mentoring program combining two teams: DAVE and The Biggest Birds. Students spent six weeks designing, building, and programming Alex with help from mentors.
Alex also placed as runner-up in the Technical Division, ranking fourth in Ontario. Regional wins earlier this year included an Innovation in Control Award and event victories at Durham College and Newmarket.
The team now heads to Houston to represent Canada at the world championships from April 16 to 19. They’ll compete against 600 of the best teams in the world.
