The City of Kingston has been nationally recognized for its leadership in climate action and sustainable building.
The Canada Green Building Council (CAGBC) awarded the City’s Facilities Management and Construction Services (FMCS) team with the Government Leadership Award, honouring its work managing over 160 municipal buildings while reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 21 per cent per square foot since 2018.
The team’s work includes energy monitoring, solar panel installations, over 100 EV chargers, and Canada’s first municipal liquid desiccant dehumidifier pilot at the INVISTA Centre.
Russell Horne, Manager of Facilities Energy & Asset Management, was named Green Building Champion for leading Kingston’s building decarbonization efforts, creating a carbon budgeting tool, and organizing the 2024 Kingston Climate Expo.
These efforts support the City’s goal to reach carbon neutrality by 2040 and are part of its larger Climate Leadership Plan.
The awards were presented June 19 at CAGBC’s Building Lasting Change Gala.
