LaSalle Causeway closure cost municipalities big money
Mayors of communities along the Rideau Canal are calling for measures to prevent economic losses like those experienced this summer with the closure of the LaSalle Causeway bridge.

Five mayors met in Smiths Falls, seeking assurances from the federal government for a smoother 2025 tourism season.

With the Rideau Canal contributing about $309 million to local tourism and supporting over 600 jobs, the mayors stressed the importance of keeping larger boats accessible.
Rideau Lakes Mayor Arie Hoogenboom warned that any uncertainty could drive tourists to other destinations.
