Walk raises awareness and brings attentions to mental health supports available
There are a number of events being held across Canada aimed to raise awareness about mental health.
One of them is the Kingston Defeat Depression Walk.
The 2.5-kilometre walk takes place May 31 at Lake Ontario Park.
The event's campaign assistant Brandi McConkey says it is events like Defeat Depression that draws people to the issue of mental health.
McConkey also works at Mood Disorders Canada, an organization that advocates those who are struggling with mental health.
She says reaching out to anyone who is experiencing a mental health issue is often the first step in seeking help.
Money raised from the Kingston Defeat Depression Walk will go to help support mental health and mood disorder programs.
McConkey says there are a number of programs that are available that cover a wide spectrum from anxiety to drug dependency.
