This is the second case of the West Nile Virus reported by the South East Health Unit.
We're keeping a close eye on this situation, as mosquitoes carrying West Nile Virus have been found in the Picton area, within the jurisdiction of the South East Health Unit.
This is the first time in 2025 that mosquitoes have tested positive for the virus in Prince Edward County.
It’s also the second case this summer in the health unit’s region. A crow in Brockville tested positive for the virus in July.
The virus spreads to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. Most people who catch it have mild or no symptoms. However, in serious cases, it can lead to brain swelling.
The health unit urges residents to wear long sleeves and pants at dawn and dusk, and to use bug spray with DEET or Icaridin. People should also remove standing water from their property and make sure screens are secure on windows and doors.
Anyone experiencing symptoms like fever, confusion, or vision loss should contact their doctor.
