New rainbow crosswalk in Odessa celebrates student creativity and inclusion

The project began several years ago as part of the Imagining My Sustainable Community initiative.

A new rainbow crosswalk has been painted across Main Street in front of Odessa Public School, bringing student ideas to life while promoting safety and inclusion.

The project began several years ago as part of the Imagining My Sustainable Community initiative, led by No. 9, which includes professional architects, artists and designers.

Students in the school’s Challenge Program were asked to envision a more sustainable, vibrant and inclusive community. Their ideas ranged from reading gardens to public art installations, shaping a vision for the future of Odessa.

Loyalist Township has embraced student input in many community projects, including the Babcock Mill Reading Garden, which has become a popular gathering place for learning and community events.

The rainbow crosswalk is both a safety feature and a visible symbol of pride and inclusion. Township officials say it highlights the important role youth play in shaping their community and demonstrates how creative student ideas can become lasting, tangible improvements in public spaces.
