The Ontario Provincial Police is urging the public to make safety a priority during the final long weekend of summer.
The OPP says Labour Day weekend has seen more collisions and fatalities on its roads, trails and waterways than any other long weekend. Since 2015, there have been 69 collisions and 76 fatalities during Labour Day weekends.
Police say nearly all road and trail fatalities have involved factors such as impaired driving, speeding, inattention or failing to wear a seatbelt or helmet properly. On the water, nearly all fatalities have been linked to people not wearing lifejackets.
The OPP is encouraging everyone to slow down, stay alert and drive sober. Police will conduct education and enforcement activities across the province.
Drivers and passengers are also reminded they can report suspected impaired or dangerous drivers by calling 9-1-1 when it is safe to do so.
Police say responsible choices can help ensure everyone gets home safely.
