Drivers face a $490 fine and demerit points.
The Ontario Provincial Police are reminding motorists of their legal duty to slow down and move over for any emergency vehicle with flashing lights.
That message comes directly from Sergeant Ed Sanchuk of West Region OPP.
He noted that this requirement is not only the law — carrying a $490 fine and demerit points — but is essential to keeping first responders safe as they work in unpredictable situations.
Sanchuk says emergency crews often need to step into the roadway without warning due to circumstances outside their control.
Giving them space, he stressed, is a matter of common sense and respect for the people who serve the public every day
