Kingston Police want to reduce the number of non-emergency calls made to the emergency call centre.
Kingston Police are joining forces with other organizations in Ontario to help combat misuse on the emergency phone system.
When Every Second Counts is a campaign aimed at reducing the amount of non-emergency calls to 9-1-1.
It also aims to educate those about the consequences of making false 9-1-1 calls that put a strain on the emergency communications system.
Cst. Anthony Colangeli says 9-1-1 is for emergencies and it's critical that these lines remain open for urgent needs.
In a news release, half of the 9-1-1 call police services across Ontario receive are for non-emergencies, including accidental dials, hang-ups, and frivolous inquiries.
Colangeli says Kingston Police is committed to providing residents with access to the right information and resources.
He says people with non-emergency issues such as lost items, noise complaints, and minor vehicle collisions should contact the Kingston Police non-emergency line at 613-549-4660.
