A legacy of broadcasting and community service
Kingston has lost someone who loved the city as much as the city loved him.
Floyd Patterson, a beloved CKWS broadcaster and community leader, passed away on September 30, 2024, at the age of 90. Born on May 23, 1934, in Brockville, Ontario, Floyd made lasting contributions to journalism and local governance throughout his impressive career.
He served as a city councillor for the Sydenham District from 2003 to 2006, while working with various media outlets, including The Telegraph, The Globe and Mail, The Whig Standard, and CKWS Radio and Television for over 40 years.
He was well-known for hosting the "Hotline" radio call-in show, featuring prominent guests like Pierre Trudeau, John Diefenbaker, and Willie Nelson. Floyd reported on significant events, including the 1971 Kingston Penitentiary riot.
A passionate advocate for heritage and innovation, Floyd served on several boards, including the Cataraqui Cemetery and the Kingston Heritage Foundation. He was also actively involved in fundraising efforts and various community events.
Floyd shared a loving marriage with Eileen for 70 years and is also survived by daughters Karen (Garry) and Vanessa, and his grandchildren.
