Ontario Chief Coroner has taken over the investigation
A scuba diving trip ended in tragedy near Kingston’s PumpHouse Museum after one diver died and another was rescued.
Emergency crews were called to the pier at the bottom of Lower Union Street just after 3 p.m. Sunday. Two divers were reported in distress.
Firefighters rescued one diver about 15 metres from shore using a small boat. That person was taken to hospital with minor injuries, police said.
The second diver came to the surface briefly but then slipped back underwater. A search began right away, with firefighters and the Coast Guard searching into the night.
The Ontario Provincial Police Underwater Search and Recovery Unit found the missing diver’s body around 9:30 a.m. Monday. The person was pronounced dead at the scene.
Kingston Police, Frontenac Paramedics and Kingston Fire and Rescue all responded. The Ontario Chief Coroner is now investigating what caused the incident.
