Society president says former Wolfe Island ferry captain will be missed

Brian Johnson died on May 8. He was captain of the Wolfe Island ferry between 1989 and 2015. Also was a co-founder of Wolfe Island Historical Society.

Brian Johnson is being remembered as a gifted sailor and a champion of Wolfe Island.

Flags at the Wolfe Island ferry docks in Kingston were seen flying at half-mast over the weekend in honour of Johnson who died last Thursday.

Johnson spent close to 35 years working on the ferries in eastern Ontario.

He served as captain from 1989 until his retirement in 2015.

President of the Wolfe Island Historical Society Shauna Kingstone says Johnson would often share his passion for boating with others.

Kingstone says there was no one around quite like Johnson who had made a difference in the community.

Johnson was also one of the founders and contributors to the Wolfe Island Historical Society.

Kingstone says Johnson would describe himself as a 'displaced islander' who dedicated his life to the island.

Johnston was also a writer contributing to publications such as the Kingston Whig-Standard and Thousand Islands Life Magazine.

Kingstone says Johnson had such a fulfilling life and career that it is tough to summarize his accomplishments.

She added he will be missed by the many who knew him.
