Kingston Police Board discusses bail reforms, pushes for stricter release rules
The Kingston Police Services Board received a presentation on bail administration in Ontario.
It comes as law enforcement, including Kingston Police Chief Scott Fraser, continues to advocate for stricter release requirements.
Chief Fraser expressed frustration over officers repeatedly arresting the same individuals, highlighting the impact on both police and public safety.
Local Crown Attorney Andrew Scott delivered the presentation, explaining key bail principles, such as grounds for detention and reverse onus provisions. These provisions apply to certain cases where the accused must prove why they should be released.
While some bail reforms have been introduced in the province, many police chiefs across Canada argue that the changes don’t go far enough.
They point to a recurring issue where offenders are quickly released, reoffend, and are arrested again, perpetuating a cycle of crime.
Chief Fraser emphasized the need for stronger measures to ensure public safety and reduce the burden on law enforcement.
