Two Kingston health care heroes win award for changing patients’ lives

The award celebrates doctors, nurses, and other health workers who treat patients with dignity, respect, and teamwork.

Two local health care workers have received top honours for their compassionate care at Kingston Health Sciences Centre (KHSC).

Speech language pathologist Carolyn Knuude and surgical oncologist Dr. Jay Engel were named this year’s winners of the Exceptional Healer Award. The award is given each year by KHSC’s Patient and Family Advisory Council to two professionals who go above and beyond for patients and families.

Knuude was praised for her kindness, strong listening skills, and support for patients with communication and swallowing problems. She said the award made her feel seen in a role that is often behind the scenes.

Dr. Engel, who helps patients facing breast cancer, was recognized for his calm and clear approach during difficult times. He said the award is a meaningful way to end a long and rewarding career.

The award celebrates doctors, nurses, and other health workers who treat patients with dignity, respect, and teamwork. Winners are chosen based on nominations from patients and co-workers.

Nominations are accepted year-round and winners are announced during Patient Experience Week.
