Kingston roundabout costs to be debated

The cost of the roundabout has jumped by more than $1.4 million.

City council is set to decide Tuesday night whether to build a roundabout or a signalized intersection on Hwy. 15 at Summer Valley Terrace.

The intersection will serve a new subdivision being built in a former quarry. A roundabout was originally planned, with the developer pledging $375,000 and the city budgeting $3.8 million.

But now, the cost of the roundabout has jumped by more than $1.4 million. The full project would cost over $5.2 million due to highway realignment, infrastructure relocation, stormwater pond changes, and an environmental assessment.

The developer has offered to build the roundabout for $3.4 million, but the city would still need to increase its budget by $350,000 to cover remaining expenses.

As a cheaper alternative, city staff are also recommending a signalized intersection that would cost about $1 million.

Council will review both options and make a decision at its upcoming meeting.
