A 220 MW project would be situated on a piece of land near Brandon Rd. and the 401.
Loyalist Township council has voted to support a proposed 220-megawatt solar project west of Odessa.
The development by Westbridge Renewable Energy Corp. would cover 323 hectares between Highway 401 and Brandon Road. The project is part of the Independent Electricity System Operator’s Long Term Procurement 2 plan, which aims to add 1,600 megawatts of electricity to Ontario by 2034.
Applications are due by October 16.
Council members said they support the project because it produces greenhouse gas-free electricity and does not use prime agricultural land. An environmental assessment will also be conducted.
Some local residents raised concerns about the project’s proximity to their property, wildlife impacts, and limited consultation.
Westbridge acknowledged these concerns and said they would be considered in future planning.
Council approval is contingent on addressing resident and township concerns. Residents are encouraged to engage in the planning process.
